The art of
Steffen Maria East >>

I stand in front of the work “Notte di stelle cadenti”, let the colors, the aura of this painting affect me, feel the power, the energy of the work of art. They enliven the room with a dense atmosphere, a window into the night sky, a brief glimpse of the universe, so to speak.

The sheer size of the painting seems to dominate the entire salon. At the same time, the transparency and delicacy can be felt despite the powerful brushstrokes. Strength, daring, courage to be unconventional paired with delicate sensitivity and refreshing carefreeness: that is Steffen Maria Ost.

Despite all the spontaneity and creativity, his work is well thought out and planned, but always has a hint of tongue-in-cheek and irony.

Picssso once said:
“Painting was not invented to decorate homes! It is a weapon for attack and defense against the enemy.”

Is it permissible to object?
You can and you should!
Ost does not paint to produce decorative accessories; this man uses the canvas and the paint not to create his intimate Guernica, but to express his feelings, his zest for life, his intellect. He paints not to hurt, but to cloak his vulnerability. His pictures are sometimes brutally dark, sometimes pastel-like in tenderness, wild and passionate, planned and spontaneous. Always authentic, unpretentious, direct like himself, always reflecting in a different facet what life gives him to experience.

“Art is magic, freed from the lie of being truth”

A quote from Theodor W. Adorno that applies exactly to Steffen Maria Ost: he conjures up images on canvas from his world of ideas, without claiming perfection, without regard to pedantic finger-wagging. The assessment of his work is in the eye of the beholder and thus at his discretion.

The artist is his work and stands by it. His pictures polarize, stir up emotions, awaken the unknown and familiar, depict dream worlds and captivate with their sensual mixture of materials and styles. His art is an experience and not an object.

Finally, I quote El Greco (1541-1614), free spirit of another era:

"Art is wherever you look for it; praise the twinkling stars, for they are God's carefree splotches."

May Steffen’s creativity give us many more sparks of stars.
